In this video, I'm going to show you the importance of choosing a profitable niche
0:03
for your blog and how it can make or break your success. So true
0:09
Everyone, my name is Kevin Smack and I've been blogging for years now. In that time, I've seen what works and what doesn't when it comes to blogging
0:18
I know because a lot of my blogs failed in the beginning. When people think about starting a blog, they often don't know where to start
0:25
But there's one thing that helps more than anything else. And that's choosing the right niche
0:33
The right niche is so important because if you choose the wrong niche, you are doomed
0:38
from the start. If it's way too competitive, you are just making it so much harder for yourself
0:45
Now, there's always a chance you can compete in a very competitive niche, but if it's your
0:50
first few sites, I would not recommend it. I would try to go for something easy that's not very competitive
0:58
so you can go in and dominate the niche that you start
1:03
I'm going to show you three examples of sites that I've created that I call failures
1:09
Technically, it's two and a half. There's one that's kind of like half and half
1:14
I'm going to show you the websites and why they failed and give you some other tips along the way
1:20
A lot of people say giving up early is the number one reason people fail
1:25
and I don't completely agree with that. because if you put enough blog posts on and you quit blogging, in time, those blog posts are going
1:35
to build up authority if they're done right. And all of a sudden you're going to start getting
1:39
traffic. Eventually, six months or a year later, you just randomly drop in on your ytics and
1:46
boom, you see it's working. Well, guess what? You can just jump right back in and continue with that
1:52
website. That website's not dead. You still have it. You still have all that other content
1:57
now you just have the extra energy to keep going. I don't think that's the problem. I think the
2:03
number one problem is peaking the wrong niche. You can throw as much content as you humanly
2:09
possibly can afford, make, create, or anything. But if it's the wrong niche or you're not focusing
2:17
on the right keywords, it's not going to matter. But for this video, we're going to talk specifically
2:21
about the niche because we've talked about keywords before. I'll put a video up top in
2:27
case you're curious about checking out how I find keywords now. That's the one way other than using
2:33
Carl from keywordcare.com. And not sponsored. Let's go ahead and just jump in and show you
2:40
these examples. These are not going to be in order, but they are going to be in order from
2:45
my failures. So we're gonna go with the number one, the biggest failure of ever that I dumped
2:52
a lot of money into shieldedvpn.com. Yes, I made a VPN site because I found that you can resell
3:01
other people's VPNs. And I was like, this is going to be awesome. I'm going to go ahead
3:05
make a website and dominate. I also have a YouTube presence. So I was like, I need a product for my
3:11
YouTube. So why not do this? Because I also have a website with like technical phone support and my
3:19
other one's kind of like gaming with tech built in. So I was like, this would be a good thing to
3:25
sell, but it just didn't work. There's just too many VPNs. It's too competitive. I thought I did
3:31
a really good job on this site. I actually am no longer selling them. I've kind of just shut it
3:38
down to let my current subscriptions fade out, which they have, I'm actually going to be shutting
3:43
this down when the domain ends, which is in like a month. Yeah, I'm just going to let it go. And I
3:50
mean, I put a lot of time and content into this, a lot of work. I probably have 30 blog posts
3:58
This was one of my first ones. So when I started it, I did go ahead and make a big mistake. After
4:06
like three months, I noticed a few blog posts were ranking. But what did I do? I took those blog posts
4:12
and rewrote them too much and added extra content. That way they can go ahead and be better and rank
4:21
better. But instead, Google took this as a red flag and just killed the site. I thought it was my tech
4:28
support. So I went through and completely set everything up. I have YouTube videos. I have
4:35
step-by-step instructions. I've tried everything with this site. I got to the point where I was
4:43
like I not going to do anything on this site until I get a sale Every time I would sell a VPN service which was maybe like once a month I would go ahead and spend about two hours on the website and work on it
4:59
So the website I feel is really good. All the content on it is just going to be garbage. I'm
5:05
just going to throw it away. It's not ranking. It's very well written. It's sales copy
5:11
which means it's kind of like giving you a problem. And then at the end, it talks about how Shielded VPN can fix it
5:19
That is my number one failure. VPN niche is way too competitive
5:26
I mean, I've redone the site. I've changed the logo. I've changed the slogans
5:31
I've tried everything I could. And it's just not taking. So this site is going to be one that I am going to let go
5:41
I thought about selling it, but, you know, I've taken, I removed the back end so you can no longer, you'd have to set that up yourself
5:49
It's just blog posts. It barely gets any organic traffic. Here's a quick look at the last six months of the traffic and impressions
5:59
Some things kind of do pick up a little bit, but it just, it performs very badly
6:06
Shielded VPN, RIP, I'll be shutting you down. and it's sad, but it's going to happen
6:14
Let's go to my number two failure, which was a little rough
6:19
Here we are, and don't adjust your eyes. Yes, that is a bright color, and I probably shouldn't have made it that bright
6:27
but that's not the reason this site's failing. HelpfulTutorials.net is a spinoff of my YouTube channel
6:35
Here's a quick look at Helpful Tutorials. Oh, I should probably subscribe
6:40
So this is a tutorial channel for iPhones. I've kind of stopped working on it in the last three months
6:45
but a lot of my earlier videos do point to the website to say
6:49
hey, come check it out and join. And with joining, you can get this awesome little sheet that I made
6:57
It is amazing. I spent so much time and so much money for this infographic
7:04
that I get maybe like one person a week that signs up and comes gets it
7:09
But I mean, basically what it is, is this an iPhone picture that shows you how to fix all the problems that are very common, which, you know, it's fixing something
7:20
People come and they do sign up for it, which is cool. But the rest of the site's not doing well
7:26
The organic traffic's not there. I do have ads on it. However, I do have ad blocker on right now just to show you these sites in full
7:35
you know my idea of this site was to build a website and do everything with iphones i have a
7:43
very skilled experience with iphones i've been working on them since the first one i've fixed
7:49
thousands i've set up thousands i've done it for jobs so i know how iphones work so that's why i
7:57
made the channel because i had knowledge and every time someone would ask me how to fix something i'd
8:02
be like, I should make a video on it. So I did. And in here I did something different, which I
8:08
thought was cool. And it was kind of an experiment under iPhone videos. There is a plugin. I think
8:16
it's called V blogger. And what it does is it grabs your videos from your YouTube channel
8:23
and automatically puts it onto the website. Now it's a little rough to set up and stuff
8:30
But I mean, I think it was like 30 bucks or something. But it's pretty cool because if I would post a new video, it would just make a new thread
8:38
Of course, it would take everything from my comments and throw them in here. So there'd be a lot of stuff
8:43
Even if people commented, it might say stuff down below. It'll copy the comments as well
8:49
So you can come in here and edit it. And I have done that on some videos that have started getting impressions
8:55
What I did was I came in here, edited them, and I hired someone from Fiverr to pretty much go through, take pictures, and type what's going on
9:05
You know, type step-by-step instructions. So taking the video, turning it into a blog
9:10
And I thought this would do really well, but I think the iPhone is just way too competitive
9:16
Especially nowadays with Apple. Apple is just, you know, they're usually number one for their own ranking when it comes to tech support
9:23
So this site was a failure. I did do a few blogs. I think one of them got a little bit of traffic
9:30
That was the one. Where is it here How to clean your iPhone And I think the reason this did well was because i added some original pictures that i took and i showed how to clean it this was one of the first ones you know
9:50
i was going through and showing you exactly how to go through and clean it and this one seemed to do
9:55
good and i also had to clean the charging cable so this one started doing okay but never really
10:01
took off. I also have had blogs that I've really targeted. There was this one that was
10:08
very competitive that I was always doing so close on video. I think it's under the video section
10:16
but I was unable to get it. And unfortunately it would have been a good amount of views and
10:21
get the site moving, but it didn't. Then you have your member section, which is basically when you
10:26
signed up for that thing you'd be a member because eventually I wanted to start a professional
10:31
training area where people could pay to be members and I would go through and teach them more about
10:36
iPhones. The problem with that is I couldn't really find enough material that would be beneficial
10:42
in my mind because I already gave it all away for free and I didn't feel like it was a good idea to
10:49
sell something that I've already given. I'm not like that. If I had a bunch of secrets yes but I
10:55
didn't so kind of let that go and I had a question section so people could come ask questions and I
11:01
was answering them and then I stopped this is the last six months and it actually gets more clicks
11:08
than I thought but not many I think I thought most of the clicks were from the YouTube channel so it
11:14
does look like it has it does get a few a day zero to four for the most part uh impressions is good
11:22
average CRT is terrible and average position. So I don't know. This is age now. A lot of the stuff
11:29
that I am tracking in has changed. So yes, it was true, but it's not anymore. So let's jump into my
11:36
final site. And this is pro gamer stories. My main channel, Kevin Smack is YouTube gaming
11:43
and Fortnite's mainly what I was playing. So it's like, I'm going to make a channel
11:47
about the Fortnite professionals. I did my research, and to be honest
11:51
everything ranking for people's names is trash. And I'm like, I can do better than that
11:56
I can make these articles that are amazing and talk all about everyone
12:01
and it's just gonna do awesome. I was like, there's no way this can fail
12:07
And unfortunately, it isn't doing well. If we go to gamers, we go here
12:15
and I probably have about 30 some loaded. These are probably way too large
12:20
Let me look for one that's pretty large. This is probably the one that's doing the best
12:27
So let's jump into 72 hours. Maybe not the best, but it's doing pretty good
12:33
So here I would have all their social media. So you could go to their social media and follow them
12:38
I would have all their equipment. That way I can sell stuff on Amazon
12:42
And I was like, man, this site's looking good. I'm doing all this research
12:46
I'm just going to crush it and then I'm going to tell a story about them
12:50
I'm going to go ahead and talk all about them growing up
12:53
about how they got into gaming, you know, their start you know, who they played with
13:00
their victories, the teams they've joined and I would put their team that they're on
13:06
you know, their stats, their victories their earnings everything and it's going to
13:12
blow up and it didn't. And I even eventually, originally this site was called fixfortnite.com and it was
13:21
a technical fix site. But when I wanted to do this, I renamed it to Pro Gamer Stories and had
13:27
to start the domain authority all over. It was a bit rough, but I still had the technical fixes
13:31
on there. And what happened was the technical fixes started doing better. I'll just jump into
13:38
one for example i think i've only have like five of these on here and it's like how to fix a lag
13:45
and it goes into everything i am sponsored by no ping still i'm sponsored by no ping they're great
13:50
so they help games run better and so this article goes through everything there so
13:57
the site in all does get some traffic so it's not a complete failure however gaming niches
14:04
are really low. And the part that I wanted to do well isn't. As far as selling the equipment
14:11
here's the equipment I sold on that website this year. $4.99 in commission. So you must be saying
14:20
that site probably doesn get any traffic at all right No it does get traffic It gets about a hundred views a day and the most popular article does have equipment on it for some reason it just doesn get it we looking at it been down a
14:37
bit so it's more like 70 or 80 views a day yeah this is just search console so with regular ytics
14:44
some of the traffic is through my youtube channel i probably get about 100 clicks a day uh 80 to 100
14:51
But to sell that little is insane. I have recently changed the button color to blue to offset from the green to see if that enhances it
15:03
But it didn't do a single thing at this point. I've tried moving this around
15:08
This used to be in the middle of the article when I talked about equipment. They used to be in the sidebar
15:14
I've tried everything and it just doesn't seem to go through and generate any
15:20
This site is generating money. I have thought about putting sidebars on it and just letting
15:27
some more ads run so I can get some more money on desktop. This site does pay for make more money
15:35
than it does cost to run since I have a hosting plan that allows everything. So here's an idea of
15:42
about how much it gets, $12.57. And I'm probably paying maybe like $30 a year-ish for the domain
15:52
and the privacy. It's still making a little bit of money, which is good because I'm just trying to
15:58
make the original amount of money that I put in back. And nowadays, it's also putting some extra
16:05
clicks into my level. That's good. You know, I'm getting closer because I have that extra $2,000
16:11
2200 clicks a month. Fortnite's definitely been down a bit lately, so that's why the
16:18
tracking has gone down a bit. And those are three examples of how to pick the wrong niche
16:25
Try not to go with a really popular niche. Try to do something that has not been touched too often
16:31
Search for stuff. See what comes up. If you're seeing forms and you're seeing Quora, Reddit
16:37
that kind of stuff. It's looking good, but make sure it's multiple searches. You know
16:42
it's getting harder and harder to find that specific niche, but they're out there. You can
16:49
also go broad like I did for my playground site and then inside that playground site
16:54
go for a specific thing and just dominate that. Just write as many articles on that area
17:01
as you can. For example, with me, I'm doing bounce houses, so I'm writing a whole bunch
17:07
of stuff about bounce houses. Once I'm done, I'll go to something else. Now I am doing other articles
17:12
at the same time, which is good because I like to kind of like spray and pray, they call it
17:17
you know, put a bunch of stuff up and see what Google likes. But at the same time, you need to
17:22
focus in on certain areas. So there's two areas I've focused on bounce houses as one
17:28
and just trying to go through and grow that. Now your Google will have a better idea of what the
17:35
site's about and be more focused and all your bounce house articles should rise up if you do
17:42
it correctly and it the we're still out on that one the site is gaining each month which you'll
17:49
see in the income report at the end of the month and lately it does seem like it's doing even better
17:55
so i am excited but i don't want to get too excited let's see if we can keep getting it to
18:01
go up. So that's what I got for you. Three of my failures before I started going through and being
18:07
successful. And like I said, if you start and then you give up, you can always go back and check your
18:13
stats to see what's happening. For me, I did RC right on cars and I did a bunch of stuff. And you
18:20
know what? I kind of said, you know, I'm going to go focus on YouTube now. I'm going to go full time
18:25
YouTube. I quit my job and I just left the blog go. And three months later it was Black Friday
18:33
and I started getting some sales on Amazon that I didn't recognize. And I kind of like zoomed in
18:39
and I was like, well, it's my ride on site. I'm like, but I don't think I'm on Google. And I
18:44
looked and I wasn't, I wasn't really on Google at all. These sales were coming from Bing and DuckDuckGo
18:53
and I mean I was selling probably like a thousand dollars for 20 clicks like very little clicks and
19:02
I'm like this is something I need to push well I can't wait for this sales time for this season
19:11
it's going to be amazing that's everything I got for you thanks so much for listening and thank you
19:16
for the view
